Top Military Officials Unite to Secure Tinubu’s 2027 Campaign Efforts
Top defense officials and retired military leaders have come together to create a security team aimed at protecting campaign activities for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. This coalition was officially launched during the inauguration of the Directorate of Security and Intelligence (DSI) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja.
The team includes notable figures such as Minister of Defence Lt.-Gen. Christopher Musa (retired), Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, and former Chiefs of Defence Staff General Lucky Irabor and General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin. Retired Major-General Sarkin Yaki Bello, who leads the DSI, stressed the importance of operational discipline and proactive intelligence gathering to ensure the safety of campaign participants.
Bello emphasized that their work must be based on verified information and that security operations should respect citizens’ rights to participate in the electoral process without fear. He called for a focus on preventive measures and thorough risk assessments to address potential threats early.
Defence Minister Musa highlighted that the opposition might exploit economic and security issues during the campaign, making security a key focus for the ruling party. He expressed confidence in the President’s return and stressed the need for teamwork to create a supportive environment for the campaign.
Former Army Chief Lt.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated officers, thanked President Tinubu and party leaders for their trust. He promised that the DSI would uphold high standards and manage sensitive intelligence carefully.
General Olonisakin, who oversees operations for the DSI, confirmed that intelligence officers will be deployed across all states as campaign activities ramp up. Meanwhile, retired Major-Gen. Adeyinka A. Famadewa warned that weak security could lead to disorder but expressed hope for a successful and peaceful election.
As political parties gear up for the 2027 elections, the APC’s use of military veterans indicates a strong focus on maintaining security and order during the campaign.
