Lionel Messi to Bid Farewell to Argentina National Team in Emotional Final Match

Lionel Messi is set to wear Argentina’s sky blue-and-white jersey for the final time on Tuesday. He will play in a friendly match against Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, where around 85,000 fans are expected to attend. This match marks the end of Messi’s 21-year international career.

Messi, who is 39 years old, has been the most-capped player in Argentina’s history. He announced his retirement from international play in August, stating, “I gave it my all; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are great young players coming up who deserve their chance.” His last training session with the team took place on Monday at a training complex named after him.

Before the match, the University of Buenos Aires will honor Messi with an honorary doctorate. He is currently under contract with Inter Miami until 2028 but has hinted that he may retire sooner due to personal reasons, including the recent death of his father.

Many of Messi’s former teammates, who helped him win the 2022 World Cup, will play in the farewell match. Coach Lionel Scaloni aims to fill the gap left by Messi, who has been a key player for Argentina since his debut in 2005. In recent games without him, the team has performed well, winning against Bolivia and Burkina Faso.

Messi is Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals in 207 matches. He is celebrated not only for his skill but also for his achievements, including winning the World Cup in 2022, the Copa America in 2021, and Olympic gold in 2008. His legacy is secure, and fans are left wondering who will take over his iconic number 10 jersey.
