WADA Urges Kenya to Enforce Strict Anti-Doping Measures Ahead of Championships
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is urging Kenya to adopt a strong stance against doping in sports. This call comes as Kenya prepares to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, the first time the event will take place in Africa.
WADA chief Witold Banka emphasized the need for a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs in sports during his recent visit to Kenya. He stated that for Kenya to maintain its reputation as the ‘Home of Champions,’ it must also ensure a clean sporting environment.
Banka highlighted that Kenya’s status as a leading sports nation brings both honor and responsibility. He noted that the country must work hard to prevent doping and protect its athletes’ reputations.
He stressed the importance of cooperation between WADA, the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), and local authorities. Banka mentioned that tackling the issue of doping requires joint efforts, especially against those involved in producing and trafficking illegal substances.
Since 2017, over 140 Kenyan athletes, primarily long-distance runners, have faced suspensions due to doping violations. Banka believes that establishing a strong anti-doping culture is crucial for Kenya’s future in hosting major sporting events.
