Akwa Ibom Governor Announces Recruitment of 4,000 New Public Workers

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has announced the recruitment of 4,000 new public servants to address gaps in the state’s public service. This announcement was made during an orientation event for the new hires at the Ibom Tropicana Event Centre in Uyo, the state capital.

Governor Eno explained that his administration discovered over 2,000 ghost workers—people who were on the payroll but did not actually work—and several retired workers still receiving salaries. After addressing these issues, he stated that it was necessary to recruit new staff to fill the vacant positions and improve the efficiency of the public service.

“Governance is serious business,” Eno said, emphasizing that the recruitment was aimed at strengthening the public service rather than just increasing the number of workers. He highlighted the importance of having capable individuals in these roles to ensure effective governance.

The governor also reiterated his commitment to timely payment of salaries and benefits, thanking President Bola Tinubu for providing funds to support state projects and salaries. He encouraged the new employees to excel in their roles, embrace digital skills, and maintain professionalism in their service.

In her remarks, the Head of Service, Mrs. Elsie Peters, praised the governor’s leadership, noting the high quality of the newly recruited workforce. She expressed confidence that the training and orientation provided would lead to significant improvements in the public service.
