Sokoto State Commits to Enhancing Social Protection Policies to Fight Poverty
The Sokoto State Government, led by Governor Ahmed Aliyu, is dedicated to improving social protection policies to help reduce poverty and support vulnerable residents. This commitment was highlighted during a recent meeting with local government leaders, where strategies for funding and implementing these programs were discussed.
Dr. Bashir Achida, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Development, shared details about a new social protection policy document. This document aims to guide the implementation of programs and identify key areas where government support is needed. Achida emphasized that social protection is essential for ensuring that residents live with dignity.
The meeting took place at Sokoto Guest Inn and included discussions on how local governments can play a crucial role in these initiatives. Achida praised the local government chairmen for their commitment and recognized the support from organizations like the European Union and UNICEF for their contributions to child survival and social protection efforts.
Alhaji Abba Shehu Tambuwal, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Sokoto State, assured that local councils would allocate funds for social protection initiatives. He expressed support for the state government and development partners in implementing these programs effectively.
UNICEF Social Policy Specialist, Malam Isah Ibrahim, noted that Sokoto is one of four states receiving support from the European Union for social protection efforts. He mentioned that the EU is considering increasing its financial investment in Nigeria in 2027, with Sokoto being a potential candidate for additional funding.
