Tinubu and APC Urged to Explain ₦10 Billion Ebola Fund Amid Outbreak Concerns

President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are facing pressure to clarify the status of a ₦10 billion fund meant for Ebola preparedness. This fund was announced in June, but reports suggest it has not been used, even after a confirmed Ebola case in Abuja.

Phrank Shaibu, who is the Director of Strategic Communication for the Atiku Abubakar campaign, criticized the APC for focusing on political attacks instead of addressing the fund’s status. He stated that the government’s response has been more about making jokes about names rather than providing answers about the money and the health crisis.

Shaibu pointed out that the Presidency had announced the immediate release of the ₦10 billion for Ebola preparedness but questioned why the APC claims the fund is still untouched. He demanded clarity on whether the money was actually released, where it is being held, and why it has not been utilized.

He also raised concerns about the government’s response timeline to the Ebola case, noting that the World Health Organization reported the patient showed symptoms on October 7 and was confirmed positive on October 20. Shaibu asked for details about when health authorities were alerted and what actions were taken.

In addition, he emphasized the importance of protecting the health of the 44 individuals identified as contacts of the Ebola patient, stating that their safety should be the priority rather than political gains. He called for adequate protection and resources for health workers involved in managing the outbreak.

Shaibu urged the Tinubu administration to provide clear public health guidance regarding any potential restrictions on campaigning or voting due to the health emergency. He insisted that public health measures should prioritize the well-being of citizens and not be used for political advantage.

He concluded by stating that the Presidency and the APC need to provide documentary evidence to resolve the controversy and demonstrate their preparedness to protect Nigerians from the Ebola threat.
