Oshiomhole Says ₦70,000 Transport Allowance Shows Tinubu Cares for Workers

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, has expressed support for the Federal Government’s decision to provide a ₦70,000 transport allowance for workers. He believes this move demonstrates President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of workers.

During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oshiomhole stated that the Tinubu administration deserves recognition for its efforts. He emphasized that the new allowance effectively doubles the previous amount for some workers, saying, “If a man who was on ₦70,000 now is given ₦70,000 addition that makes it ₦140,000 for him, it’s a hundred percent increase.” He highlighted the significance of this increase for everyday people.

The ₦70,000 transport allowance is set to be provided monthly for six months, starting in November 2026. This decision came after a meeting between the government and the Nigeria Labour Congress on October 27. The agreement also includes the payment of outstanding allowances in three installments beginning in November.

However, the Trade Union Congress has rejected this transport allowance, arguing that workers need a permanent salary increase instead of temporary support. Oshiomhole also criticized the previous administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, claiming they failed to ensure timely salary payments for workers.

Looking ahead to the 2027 presidential election, Oshiomhole believes Nigerians will have a clear choice between Tinubu, who he says has unified the exchange rate, and Atiku Abubakar, whom he accuses of allowing different rates based on personal connections. He also mentioned that Peter Obi, the candidate from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has not presented a viable alternative to Tinubu’s policies.

Oshiomhole respects the right of opposition candidates to run for president but feels that Tinubu should continue in office after overcoming initial challenges.
