Flamingos Captain Dreams of Historic U-17 World Cup Win Against Japan

Chidi Harmony, the captain of Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, expressed her hopes of winning the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, calling it an unforgettable moment for her team and the country. As they prepare to face Japan in the final, Harmony noted that reaching this stage is a significant achievement, but winning the trophy would make it even more special.

“It would be a great thing, a joy, and would never be forgotten in life,” Harmony said. She emphasized that winning would make her, her teammates, coaches, and the nation proud. The Flamingos have made history by becoming the first African team to reach the final of this tournament.

The team’s journey to the final was not easy. They lost their first match against Poland but bounced back to win five consecutive games against teams like Puerto Rico, DPR Korea, Mexico, Venezuela, and Brazil. Their impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals secured their spot in the championship match.

Head coach Akeem Busari credited the team’s turnaround to psychological support, renewed confidence, and a change in attitude after their initial defeat. He explained that they needed to counsel the players to help them regain focus and improve their approach to the game.

Busari acknowledged the strength of the Japanese team, noting their performance against DPR Korea, but he believes the final will be a different challenge for both sides. He emphasized that the attitude and mentality with which they approach the game will be crucial.

As the final approaches, Busari urged his players to stay focused and reminded them that their work is not finished yet. “We want to make our mentality right… we’ll just have to really fight on until we get there,” he said.

Nigeria has the chance to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time, marking a historic achievement for African women’s football.
