Nollywood Film ‘Agbara Nla’ Sets Record with N71 Million in Preview Sales

The Nollywood film ‘Agbara Nla: The Return’ has made headlines by earning about N71 million from preview screenings in just one day. This amount was reported during its preview period from September 25 to October 1, according to Nigerian Box Office, a platform that tracks box office performance in Nigeria.

During this preview, the film had over 12,000 admissions, making it the highest single-day preview gross ever recorded in West Africa. It also achieved the largest first-day admissions for any film in 2026 and set a record for the highest first-day gross for a Nollywood film.

The film’s distributor, Nile Entertainment, highlighted that ‘Agbara Nla: The Return’ not only broke records for Nollywood but also for faith-based films. They stated, “From the biggest first-day gross for a Nollywood title to the biggest faith-based opener of all time, the biggest single-day previews in West Africa, and the #1 movie of the week.”

‘Agbara Nla: The Return’ is currently showing in cinemas across Nigeria, 33 years after the original film was released. The original ‘Agbara Nla’ was created by Christian filmmaker Mike Bamiloye and was released in 1993.

The new film follows the story of Muwonleru, a village under the influence of a powerful herbalist named Isawuru. Two believers, Olaboye and Olatomi, come from the city to share their Christian faith, leading to a clash with Isawuru’s spiritual power. Mike Bamiloye returns to play Isawuru, and the film is directed by Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua Bamiloye.
