Gynaecologist Highlights Preventable Causes of Infertility in Nigeria

Dr. Qudus Lawal, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo State, has pointed out that untreated infections and unsafe abortions are significant causes of preventable infertility in Nigeria. He shared these insights during an interview in Lagos.

According to Dr. Lawal, around one in four married couples in Nigeria face fertility challenges. He explained that infertility can be classified into two types: primary and secondary. Primary infertility occurs when couples have never been able to conceive, while secondary infertility affects women who have had previous pregnancies but struggle to conceive again.

Dr. Lawal noted that most infertility cases in Nigeria are secondary and can often be prevented with timely medical intervention. He identified sexually transmitted infections as a leading cause, which can lead to complications like blocked fallopian tubes if not properly treated. He mentioned that pelvic inflammatory disease, often caused by infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea, can also block these tubes.

In men, conditions like epididymitis can harm reproductive organs. Unsafe abortions and poor medical practices can further contribute to infertility by causing uterine scarring or infections that damage reproductive systems. Additionally, infections after childbirth and various factors like childhood infections, exposure to harmful substances, smoking, and certain medical conditions can affect fertility.

Dr. Lawal emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment of conditions like endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome, which can help manage infertility. He called for more fertility treatment facilities in public hospitals and suggested that health insurance should cover fertility care to lower costs.

He urged the government to raise awareness about infertility prevention, including the importance of treating infections promptly, avoiding harmful habits, and educating the public on these issues.
