Woman Takes Ex-Husband to Court Over Unpaid Dowry in Kaduna

A woman named Ummulkhairi Lawal has filed a lawsuit against her ex-husband, Isa Haruna, in a Sharia Court located in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State. She claims that he has not paid her dowry of N120,000 after their divorce on March 27.

In court, Ummulkhairi asked the judge to compel Isa to pay the dowry. Isa, who works as a commercial tricycle driver, requested four months to gather the money needed to fulfill this obligation.

The judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, emphasized that in Islam, dowries should be paid promptly to ensure fairness and avoid inconveniencing women. He ruled that Isa must pay Ummulkhairi the agreed dowry amount.

Isa was given a deadline of October 5 to settle the payment. The case highlights the importance of dowry payments in Islamic marriages and the legal recourse available for women in such situations.
