Saheed Sunday Celebrates First Class Graduation from LASU in English
Saheed Sunday has graduated with First Class honors from the Department of English at Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2025-2026 session. He achieved a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.59 out of 5.0 and published two poetry collections before completing his degree.
In an interview, Saheed shared that his secondary school English teacher, Mr. Babatunde Sanyaolu, greatly influenced his decision to study English. Initially, he struggled academically, but a school debate sparked his interest in the subject. Mr. Sanyaolu recognized Saheed’s potential and mentored him, which helped him develop a passion for English.
Saheed chose LASU because it was affordable and he wanted to avoid putting financial strain on his parents. He believes that attending LASU was a blessing, as it provided him with the opportunity to excel academically and personally.
To achieve his academic success, Saheed focused on understanding the material deeply rather than just memorizing it. He developed a unique approach to studying, which involved teaching others what he learned. His final-year project aimed to create a grammatical formula to help people understand Nigerian spoken-word poetry.
Saheed sees studying English as a valuable choice that opens many career opportunities. He began working as an editor while still an undergraduate and hopes to empower others through language and communication.
Although he had a busy academic life, Saheed did not engage much in social activities. He prioritized his studies and held leadership roles, which he found rewarding but challenging. He advises students to surround themselves with like-minded peers to help maintain focus and motivation.
