Wike Questions Obi’s Political Future Ahead of 2027 Elections
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has stated that the political momentum that helped Peter Obi gain attention in the 2023 presidential election is no longer relevant. Wike made these comments during a media chat on Thursday, where he expressed skepticism about the ability of opposition parties to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Wike referred to the support for Obi as the ‘Obi Kererenke’ wave, claiming he has effectively ended it. He described Obi, who was the Labour Party’s candidate in 2023, as lacking substantial offerings for Nigerians. Wike argued that the conditions that allowed Obi to perform well in the last election cannot be repeated.
When pressed by a journalist about the potential for a run-off election, Wike questioned who would be involved, suggesting that the opposition has not proven themselves capable of governing. He remarked, “Nigerians know Obi has nothing to offer. He’s a dramatist.” Wike also doubted whether the enthusiasm for Obi’s campaign still exists, particularly in terms of financial support from his followers.
Wike pointed to the electoral success of Senator Ireti Kingibe, who won a seat in the Federal Capital Territory as a Labour Party candidate, arguing that her victory was due to the political climate at the time rather than the strength of the party itself.
While Wike acknowledged the popularity of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, he questioned his influence outside of Kano, citing poor performance in other northern states during the 2023 election. He challenged the notion that the North could provide a significant advantage to opposition candidates.
Wike also criticized former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar for not campaigning in Rivers State during the last election, suggesting that this lack of effort would affect Atiku’s support in future elections. Wike’s comments come as political dynamics shift ahead of the 2027 elections, with various opposition figures attempting to unite against Tinubu’s re-election bid.
