Wike Meets Fubara to Discuss Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections in Rivers State

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, met with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Tuesday night in Port Harcourt. The meeting aimed to bring together various political factions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike has been visiting local government areas to reconcile with politicians who support other candidates, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Hon. Kingsley Chinda from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Attendees at the meeting included key allies of Fubara, such as Dr. Edison Ehie and Amb Chijioke Ihunwo.

While Wike and Fubara did not speak to the press after the meeting, sources indicated that the goal was to create a united front for the elections, with hopes of securing Chinda’s candidacy for governor and Tinubu’s re-election.

However, the meeting faced criticism from some observers. They expressed concerns about Wike’s strong influence over the state’s political landscape, claiming he controls local government chairmen, the state budget, and key appointments. One unnamed source questioned the need for reconciliation, suggesting that Wike’s dominance limits Fubara’s ability to govern independently.

Another observer suggested that for the reconciliation to be meaningful, Wike should also engage with former governors such as Chief Rufus Ada George and Dr. Peter Odili. This, they argued, would demonstrate a genuine commitment to unifying the party.
