US Withdraws B-1 Bombers from UK Airbase Following Security Incident
The US government announced on Sunday that it has removed all B-1 Lancer bombers from RAF Fairford, a British airbase. This decision comes after a security incident at the base last month, which is now under investigation.
On September 27, police were called to the airbase in southwest England after a local farmer reported suspicious activity involving a group of men and several vans. This led to the evacuation of 85 homes nearby. Although investigators did not find any explosives, they did recover a quantity of petrol from the vans, according to counter-terrorism police.
A Pentagon official confirmed that all US bombers previously stationed at RAF Fairford have returned to their home bases in the United States. The official noted that operational security prevented them from confirming the movements of military assets in real-time.
Speculation regarding the motives behind the incident has ranged from a potential terror threat to fuel theft, especially as energy prices in the UK have reached record highs. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham mentioned there were strong indications of Iran’s involvement, a claim that Iran has denied.
Six men, including a UK-Iranian dual national, were arrested in connection with the incident but have since been released on bail, which drew criticism from US officials. President Donald Trump expressed his disapproval of the release, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that a foreign actor might be involved.
Adding to the mystery, reports indicate that one of the initial suspects alerted police about the incident, but authorities have not commented on this. Security measures at the base have reportedly been increased since the incident.
RAF Fairford is the only airbase on the British mainland used by the US for specific operations, including those related to Iran. The incident unfolded after a farmer near the base reported seeing vans blocking a road and a group of masked men fleeing the area.
