President Bola Tinubu will speak to the nation on Thursday, October 1, 2026, to celebrate Nigeria’s independence anniversary. This address is part of the events organized by the Federal Government for Nigeria’s 66th independence day.
The presidential speech is scheduled for 7 a.m. and will be broadcast live on Channels Television and other media outlets, according to Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s media aide.
This will be Tinubu’s fourth Independence Day address since he took office on May 29, 2023. The Federal Government has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to plan a “low-key” celebration for this anniversary.
The committee’s responsibilities include organizing all approved activities for the celebration and ensuring the successful execution of the program. They will also document the planned activities for future reference.
George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chairman of the committee, emphasized the importance of reflecting on the contributions of Nigeria’s founding fathers. He noted that the anniversary is a chance for Nigerians to remember the sacrifices made for the country’s independence.
The celebration activities began with a press conference on September 24, followed by a Juma’at Service on September 25 and a Church Service on September 27.
