Nigeria Labour Congress Calls for Wage Increase and Petrol Price Cut Amid Crisis

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an immediate cut in petrol prices and a nationwide wage increase for workers. This demand comes as the NLC highlights a growing survival crisis in Nigeria. The statement was made by NLC President Joe Ajaero on September 30, 2026, coinciding with the country’s Independence Day.

The NLC pointed out that inflation has significantly reduced the real value of workers’ wages. Rising costs for petrol and transportation have led to higher prices for essential items like food, school fees, and rent. According to the NLC, petrol prices have reached ₦1,430 per litre in major cities, with even higher prices in remote areas.

The union criticized the government’s decision to remove petrol subsidies, which was supposed to provide funds for infrastructure and social services. They argue that despite the removal, petrol prices have skyrocketed, and the promised improvements have not materialized. The NLC is demanding answers on where the savings from the subsidy have gone.

In addition to lowering petrol prices, the NLC is asking for a nationwide wage award for all government workers. They emphasize that this wage award is not a handout but a necessary response to the decline in real income due to inflation. The NLC also wants a new minimum wage to be established before the end of the year, as the current minimum wage has been eroded by rising costs.

The NLC further called for tax relief measures that were previously agreed upon but have not been implemented. They also stressed the need for a reduction in government expenses and greater transparency in governance.

Beyond immediate financial concerns, the NLC is advocating for investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and education. They believe that creating opportunities for young people is essential for the country’s future.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the NLC warned against political manipulation and urged for fair treatment of voters. They reiterated their commitment to supporting workers’ rights and ensuring decent wages and safe working conditions.
