Sowunmi Advises Peter Obi on Need for Political Structure Ahead of 2027 Election
Segun Sowunmi, the leader of The Alternative movement, has stated that Peter Obi will struggle to win the 2027 presidential election without a strong political structure. Sowunmi shared these views during an interview on News Central.
He explained that political candidates need to build alliances and have a solid support system when running for office. Sowunmi said, “There are seasons and there are times you have to know you are not going to singularly run into an election that requires structure.”
Sowunmi also pointed out the importance of the political influence of governors in the South-East and how their support could impact Obi’s campaign. He noted that if all five governors in the region are satisfied with the benefits they are receiving from the Federal Government, it might affect their willingness to support a candidate like Obi.
He mentioned ongoing infrastructure projects in the South-East, particularly those led by the Minister of Works, as factors that could influence the political landscape. Sowunmi said, “If you see your Minister of Works doing exceedingly more than anybody since the Civil War to return infrastructure to the South-East, you may say, ‘Okay, why not?’”
Despite his concerns, Sowunmi affirmed that anyone should be free to run for election, even if they lack a strong political foundation. He stated, “Nobody has the right to force anybody not to go into the field to lose an election.”
Sowunmi also called for political cooperation among regions, suggesting that the South should work together while the current president completes his term. He believes that after this, power could shift back to the North, allowing for future negotiations.
He concluded by highlighting the role of democracy, saying it requires both winners and losers, and that losing candidates must accept the results of elections.
