Six Years After End SARS Protests, Victims Still Seek Justice
Six years after the End SARS protests, the pain and anger from that night still linger for many victims and their families. Gabriel, who was present at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020, shares his harrowing experience of that night.
Gabriel had traveled from Turkey to Nigeria just days before the protests escalated. On the evening of October 20, he and his friend Bright joined the peaceful demonstration. However, chaos erupted when soldiers arrived and opened fire on the crowd. Gabriel recalls the moment he saw Bright fall after being shot. In the panic, Gabriel ran for his life, only to lose consciousness after being trampled in the chaos.
He woke up in a hospital the next morning, confused and injured. Gabriel searched for Bright but could not find him. He reported the incident to the police, who took his statement but did not provide any immediate answers.
Back in their hometown, Bright’s family was devastated and angry. Gabriel’s attempts to communicate with them led to threats, and just days later, a mob attacked his father’s home, killing him in the fire. Gabriel was left in fear for his safety and that of his family, who have faced ongoing threats since the protests.
Despite numerous investigations, no one has been held accountable for the violence that night. Gabriel and others affected by the protests continue to seek justice for their lost loved ones and the trauma they have endured.
As the anniversary of the protests approaches, many are reminded of the unfinished business surrounding the events of that night. The call for justice remains strong among those who lived through the tragedy.
