The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has agreed to a request from the family of late Afrobeats singer Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, to reopen the investigation into his death. This decision was announced through the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026.
The family submitted their petition for a new investigation on April 14, 2026, and it was officially received by the police in May. They expressed concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and requested a thorough forensic examination of the events surrounding Mohbad’s death.
Following the approval of their petition, the police have assigned the case to the Special Enquiry Bureau in Lagos for further investigation. The family has been actively engaging with the new team of investigators and is committed to assisting in the process.
Despite a recent court ruling that dismissed a separate lawsuit related to the case, the family emphasized that this does not affect the ongoing police investigation. They clarified that the lawsuit was not filed by them and should not be confused with their petition for a fresh investigation.
The family is dedicated to providing any necessary information and support to ensure a thorough investigation. They have called on the police to handle the case with care, independence, and professionalism, examining all relevant details and individuals involved.
In their statement, the family reiterated their commitment to seeking justice for Mohbad, stating, “The re-investigation is ongoing. The Aloba Family remains fully engaged.”
