Study Links Dense Breasts and Age to Higher Risk of Suspicious Breast Lumps

Researchers at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan have found that women with dense breast tissue, those over 70 years old, and women who have had at least five pregnancies are more likely to have suspicious breast lumps. This was revealed in a study presented at a recent event by the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan.

The study showed that women with heterogeneously dense breasts are about ten times more likely to have suspicious lumps compared to those with other types of breast tissue. Similarly, women aged 70 and older also have about ten times the odds of presenting with these concerning lumps.

Dr. Ayo Idowu, a Consultant Radiologist at UCH, explained that the study aimed to identify factors that could help predict suspicious findings during breast screenings. The research involved women who underwent digital breast tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, at UCH. This method uses multiple X-ray images to create a detailed view of the breast, making it easier to spot abnormalities.

Heterogeneously dense breast tissue was identified as the strongest predictor of suspicious findings. The study also noted that factors like menopausal status and family history of breast cancer did not significantly affect the results.

Dr. Idowu emphasized the importance of further research focused on Nigerian women, as risk factors may differ from those found in other populations. She encouraged women to start regular mammography screenings at age 40 and to continue with annual check-ups.

For women with dense breasts, further assessment using digital breast tomosynthesis can help identify any suspicious abnormalities that may need additional investigation. Dr. Idowu stressed that early detection is crucial for improving treatment outcomes, urging women to get screened even if they do not have symptoms.
