Obasanjo, Jonathan, and Gowon Honor Late Chaplain William Okoye at Tribute Event

Former Nigerian Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, along with former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, gathered to honor the late Rev. William Okoye at a tribute event in Abuja. The event took place at the National Christian Centre on Friday.

Obasanjo praised Okoye as a man of faith and a courageous voice for truth. He shared that Okoye, who was the General Overseer of All Christians Fellowship Mission and served as chaplain at the Aso Rock Villa Chapel, was a source of wisdom during challenging times. Obasanjo noted their close collaboration from 1999 to 2007, emphasizing Okoye’s role in addressing the real-life issues faced by the people.

Goodluck Jonathan, who met Okoye while he was Governor of Bayelsa State, remembered him as a dedicated chaplain during his presidency. Jonathan highlighted Okoye’s integrity and the impact he had on the church and the nation.

Yakubu Gowon, who joined the tribute virtually due to a trip abroad, called Okoye a pioneer of the Nigeria Prays movement and praised his leadership and commitment to the community. He expressed that Okoye’s legacy would always be remembered.

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Peter Obi, shared personal memories of Okoye, noting his prayers for peace during political turmoil in Anambra State. Pastor Mrs. Toyin Okoye, the deceased’s wife, expressed gratitude for the support they received and reflected on her husband’s fearless approach to life.

Dr. Paul Enenche, founder of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, spoke about Okoye’s passion for the spiritual and physical wellbeing of Nigeria. The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described Okoye as a dedicated preacher and mentor who devoted his life to serving God and humanity.

William Okoye, who served as chaplain to two Nigerian presidents, is set to be buried next week in his hometown in Anambra.
