Nigerian Security Forces Kill ISWAP Leader Abdussamad Ohida in Owo Forest
In a recent operation, Nigerian security forces killed Abdussamad Ohida, a senior leader of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in Owo forest, Ondo State. This operation involved troops from the Nigerian Army, personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), and officers from the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun.
Ohida, also called Anwar, was reportedly planning significant terrorist attacks in southern Nigeria. He was killed along with several members of ISWAP during a surprise attack on their hideout in the forest. Security sources noted that Ohida had taken over ISWAP activities in parts of North Central and southern Nigeria after the arrest of his predecessor, Abu Ikrimah, in 2023.
According to the sources, intelligence gathered from Ikrimah helped the DSS learn about Ohida’s plans to target civilians during the upcoming holiday season and disrupt the 2027 general elections. This information was also supported by intelligence partners from the United Kingdom.
Ohida was linked to several violent incidents, including the December 31, 2025 attack on a police station in Owo, where weapons were stolen and the station was destroyed. He was also blamed for various other attacks that resulted in the deaths of police officers and civilians across Nigeria.
Officials believe that Ohida’s death is a significant setback for ISWAP, disrupting their leadership and operational capabilities in Nigeria. This event follows the recent killing of another ISIS leader, highlighting the increasing effectiveness of Nigerian security forces.
