UNICEF and Local Leaders Push for Action Against Child Marriage in Nigeria

In Gombe and Bauchi states, UNICEF and various community leaders are calling for urgent action to end child marriage and protect the rights of girls. This appeal was made during a recent event organized by UNICEF’s Bauchi office to mark the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11.

The event, themed “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” gathered traditional leaders, women’s groups, and media representatives to discuss the barriers that hinder girls’ development. Ladi Alabi, a Child Protection Specialist at UNICEF, emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the challenges faced by girls, especially those affected by early marriage.

Alabi highlighted the serious health risks associated with child marriage, including complications from early pregnancy. She urged stakeholders to prioritize girls’ education and empowerment, stating that investing in girls is key to breaking harmful cultural practices.

Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, the Chief of UNICEF’s Bauchi office, noted that ending child marriage requires a collective effort across various sectors, including health and education. She warned that without coordinated action, efforts to protect girls would be ineffective.

Participants at the event called for stronger awareness campaigns and support systems to help girls stay in school and resist early marriage pressures. They urged government agencies and community leaders to address poverty, which often increases the risk of child marriage.

Girls who attended the event shared their experiences and stressed the need for encouragement and access to opportunities. They called for an end to gender stereotypes that limit their potential and for practical assistance for those whose education has been disrupted.
