Nigerian Lawmakers Urge Government to Release Health Funds for Ebola Preparedness

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives in Nigeria urged the Federal Government to quickly release all outstanding health funds. This move aims to boost the country’s readiness to handle the Ebola virus disease.

The lawmakers believe that releasing these funds will help the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) effectively manage the situation and prevent the disease from spreading.

The call for action came after a motion was introduced by Hon. Amobi Ogah, who highlighted the seriousness of Ebola as a deadly infectious disease. He pointed out that timely detection and control measures are crucial to preventing its spread.

Ogah expressed alarm over a recent report that a woman arriving in Abuja from Uganda tested positive for Ebola. He emphasized the need for immediate action to avoid a potential outbreak, warning that delays in identifying and isolating cases could worsen the situation.

Health authorities have already traced 44 individuals who came into contact with the infected woman for further testing. However, Ogah stressed the importance of ongoing monitoring and effective contact tracing to stop the virus from spreading further.

The lawmakers also raised concerns about a lack of public awareness, shortages of essential supplies, and the preparedness of healthcare workers, which could hinder efforts to control the outbreak. They called on the Federal Government to assess the resources needed to strengthen the response to Ebola.

Furthermore, the House highlighted the need for collaboration with the World Health Organization and other health institutions to ensure that Nigeria’s response aligns with global health standards.
