Nigeria Aims for $600 Million Investment in Renewable Energy and Innovation

The Federal Government of Nigeria is working to attract more than $600 million in investments for technology and renewable energy projects. This initiative is led by the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI), which aims to support local innovators and improve access to clean energy.

Among the proposed investments is a $500 million solar energy program for universities and polytechnics. Additionally, there is a $100 million financing opportunity linked to the Tinubu Light Initiative, which aims to provide solar energy solutions to one million small businesses across Nigeria.

Dr. Kazeem Kolawole Raji, the Director-General of NBTI, shared these plans during a press conference in Abuja. He emphasized that these figures represent potential investments and financing opportunities, not funds that have already been received or used.

The solar energy program involves discussions with Gigawatt Global to create solar farms at educational institutions, which could enhance renewable electricity access and strengthen Nigeria’s clean energy infrastructure. The Tinubu Light Initiative aims to help small businesses reduce their reliance on expensive and unreliable energy sources.

Raji noted that the success of these initiatives depends on proper financing, transparent beneficiary selection, and effective maintenance. The NBTI also recently hosted the 2026 NextGen Innovation Challenge in London, showcasing 298 Nigerian innovators and their technologies across various fields.

Investments from international partners, such as a $100,000 commitment to support women innovators, were also announced. Raji highlighted the importance of building sustainable businesses and creating jobs through these initiatives, urging both local and international investors to engage with Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem.
