Nigeria Aims to Train Competitive Seafarers with New Partnership

The Federal Government of Nigeria is working to produce skilled seafarers who can compete globally. This initiative includes expanded training, professional certification, and practical experience at sea. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, announced this on Friday during the 2026 World Maritime Day celebration in Lagos.

Oyetola highlighted a partnership between Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron. This partnership includes a memorandum of understanding focused on providing cadets with the necessary onboard experience for professional certification. He emphasized that developing skilled workers is essential for Nigeria’s growth in the global maritime industry.

In addition to seafarer training, the government is also enhancing fisheries colleges and research institutions. This effort aims to equip young Nigerians and women with practical skills in areas like aquaculture, fish processing, and sustainable fisheries management. Oyetola stated that these improvements will help increase productivity and contribute to national food security.

Furthermore, the government is taking steps to improve maritime security. Oyetola noted the lifting of restrictions by the United States Coast Guard on vessels arriving from Nigerian ports, which is expected to lower shipping costs and enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses.

On the topic of port infrastructure, Oyetola mentioned ongoing modernization projects at several ports, including Onne, Warri, and Calabar. These efforts aim to expand capacity and improve efficiency, while also connecting seaports to inland dry ports and production centers.

During the event, various industry stakeholders attended, including members of the Senate and House of Representatives. The celebration also featured an essay competition for students, with prizes awarded to the winners.
