Seyi Makinde Calls for Southwest Leadership in Nigeria’s Renewal

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called on the Southwest region to take the lead in Nigeria’s national renewal. He made this appeal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, during the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) Southwest Town Hall meeting in Akure, Ondo State.

At the meeting, Makinde presented his “Reset Nigeria” agenda, which focuses on improving education, the economy, security, and political empowerment. He emphasized that the Southwest has historically been a leader in Nigeria’s progress and must reclaim this role.

Makinde rejected the idea that the Southwest should not field another presidential candidate just because the region currently holds the presidency. He pointed out that in 1999, there was no issue when former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Olu Falae both ran for president.

He argued that leadership should be based on skills and readiness to serve, not on claims of entitlement. Makinde criticized the Federal Government’s budgeting process, saying it lacks clarity, and compared it to Oyo State’s more effective budgeting.

He urged supporters to become “Reset Agents” by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and spreading the party’s message. Makinde declared that the Southwest must lead the way in transforming Nigeria, stating, “Together, we will reset Nigeria.”

Alhaji Lawal Daura, the APM vice-presidential candidate, supported Makinde’s vision and warned against political divisions within the party. Several prominent figures, including former Osun State Governor Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, praised Makinde’s leadership and called for youth support for visionary leaders.
