The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has issued a strong warning that children cannot consent to sexual intercourse. This message was shared on the agency’s social media account on Thursday, aiming to educate the public about the principles of consent.
In its post, the DSVA explained the FRIES principles, which stand for Freely Given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic, and Specific. The agency emphasized that consent must be given freely, without any pressure or manipulation. It also noted that consent can be taken back at any time, even during sexual activity.
The DSVA highlighted that consent must be informed, meaning that a person must fully understand what they are agreeing to. It cannot be obtained through lies or deception. Additionally, consent should be an enthusiastic choice, not something given out of fear or pressure.
According to the agency, consent is specific. This means that agreeing to one type of sexual activity does not mean a person agrees to another. The DSVA pointed out that under Nigerian law, a child is defined as anyone under the age of 18, and sexual intercourse with a child is illegal.
The agency stated that it does not matter if an offender believed the child was older or thought the child had consented. The law prohibits sexual activity with minors, and those convicted of this crime can face life imprisonment.
The DSVA urged the community to remember the FRIES principles and to foster a culture that respects personal boundaries and protects children from sexual abuse.
