Kwara State Begins Conversion of Omu-Aran General Hospital into Teaching Hospital

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, recently laid the foundation for turning the General Hospital in Omu-Aran into the Thomas Adewumi University Teaching Hospital. This project, part of a public-private partnership, aims to enhance access to specialized healthcare in the region.

The governor’s deputy, Kayode Alabi, spoke at the ceremony, calling this initiative a significant step forward for healthcare in Kwara South. He noted that this would be the first teaching hospital in the area, which is expected to boost medical education and improve healthcare services.

AbdulRazaq emphasized that having a tertiary healthcare facility in southern Kwara would help decentralize specialized services and lessen the load on existing hospitals, making it easier for residents to access care. He believes this project will help reduce preventable deaths and improve health outcomes in local communities.

Engr. Johnson Bamidele Adewumi, the Founder and Chancellor of Thomas Adewumi University, explained that the former General Hospital, established in 1973, provides a chance to expand specialized healthcare services. The university proposed to upgrade the existing hospital rather than build a new one, ensuring that the state government retains ownership.

Adewumi requested that the state government provide necessary financial support for the hospital’s upgrades and the hiring of specialist consultants, as the resources needed exceed what a private individual or local community can provide. The project is expected to take about 18 months to complete, with a team of experienced professionals involved in its development.

The ceremony was attended by various officials, traditional leaders, and academics, highlighting the community’s support for this important healthcare initiative.
