Kogi State Summit Supports Power Rotation, Majority Favors Ododo’s Second Term
Stakeholders from Kogi State gathered for a two-day summit to discuss political power rotation, which they believe will promote fairness and inclusion. The event took place from September 30 to October 1, 2026, at the Kay Galaxy Event Centre in Lokoja.
The summit, organized by the Kogi Unity Accord, included traditional leaders, politicians, and community groups. Most delegates agreed that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo should complete two terms before power rotation begins in 2032. This plan aims to allow time for necessary laws and discussions to be established.
Delegates noted that the current constitution does not specifically allow for power rotation among the state’s senatorial districts. They emphasized that any future arrangement must follow legal and democratic processes. The summit also highlighted that while power rotation is important, it should not come at the expense of choosing capable leaders.
However, not everyone agreed with the 2032 timeline. Some representatives argued that power should shift to Kogi West immediately after the current governor’s term ends. They pointed out that Kogi West has not had a governor since the state was formed.
The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, expressed the legislature’s willingness to consider laws that would support power rotation. He stated that stakeholder opinions would be crucial in this process.
Governor Ododo, who was represented at the summit, called for ongoing political dialogue to maintain peace in the state. He encouraged young people to reject political violence and to engage in constructive discussions.
The summit concluded with a recommendation to create a Kogi Charter of Equity and Inclusion to guide political participation and representation. It also proposed continued engagement with various community groups to ensure that all voices are heard in future political arrangements.
