How to Spot Real Honey: 5 Simple Tests to Ensure Quality

Buying honey at a local market can be tricky. Many sellers claim their honey is pure, but you might end up with a mixture of sugar syrup instead. To avoid this, here are five simple tests you can do before making a purchase.

First, check the thickness and flow of the honey. Real honey is dense and pours slowly. When you tilt the bottle, it should form a thick thread and not splash like water. If it spreads out quickly, it may contain added water or sugar syrup.

Next, try the water drop test. Ask the seller to drop a spoonful of honey into a glass of water. Pure honey will sink to the bottom without dissolving quickly, while fake honey will leave cloudy trails as it mixes with the water.

You can also perform the thumb or paper towel test. Put a drop of honey on your thumb. If it stays in a lump and doesn’t run down your finger, it’s likely pure. On paper, real honey will sit on top without soaking through quickly, unlike fake honey.

Don’t forget to smell and taste the honey. Authentic honey has a floral scent and a complex sweetness. If it smells like plain sugar syrup or tastes flat, it’s probably not real honey.

Finally, look for natural imperfections like small specks of pollen or air bubbles. Clear, spotless honey is often heavily processed. Raw honey can crystallize and may appear cloudy, which is a natural sign of quality.
