Australian MP Helen Haines Loses Leg in Intentional Car Attack
Helen Haines, an Australian Member of Parliament, has lost a leg after being hit by a car in a deliberate attack outside her office in Wangaratta on Monday. This incident occurred around 3:35 PM local time, as she was retrieving items from her car.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and seeing Haines pinned between two vehicles. The driver, who made a U-turn to return to the scene, was later identified as Brendan Nugent. He was restrained by a local barber named Ricky Jefferies, who has been praised for his quick actions during the incident.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as a “test of our character” and expressed his support for Haines, who is known for advocating transparency in politics and fighting corruption. Haines underwent surgery at a hospital in Melbourne and remains in critical condition.
The driver was arrested, and police found a knife in his vehicle. Authorities are investigating the incident, and potential charges could include harming a government official, which carries a severe penalty. The motive behind the attack is still unclear.
In response to the attack, tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with leaders condemning the violence against elected officials. Albanese noted that political discussions in Australia have become too heated and personal in recent years, emphasizing the need for respectful debate.
