Federal Government Settles N758 Billion Pension Debts for Over 957,000 Beneficiaries
The Federal Government of Nigeria has paid off pension debts totaling N758 billion, which had been owed since 2007. This payment provides financial relief to 957,045 retirees across the country. The announcement was made by Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, the Director-General of the National Pension Commission, during a conference in Lagos.
Oloworaran stated that this payment ends years of delays in pension benefits that have affected many retirees through different political administrations. She emphasized that fulfilling these obligations is a sign of good governance and respect for those who have served the nation.
In addition to clearing these debts, the National Pension Commission has credited pension rights for federal employees who are set to retire by December 2029 directly to their accounts. This is part of a broader reform initiative under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. To avoid future delays, the commission has introduced a policy to ensure timely pension payments that align with monthly salaries.
Oloworaran also highlighted efforts to improve pension awareness among Nigerians. The commission is working on initiatives to educate the public about pensions and ensure that more people understand their benefits. She mentioned that they are engaging with state governments to encourage them to adopt the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Furthermore, the conference revealed significant increases in pension payments for retirees from the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, with some seeing payouts rise by over 1,000 percent. The government is also launching new welfare programs, including free healthcare support for low-income retirees and expanding pension coverage for informal sector workers.
Despite these advancements, there remains a large gap in pension coverage, especially among informal workers. Only a small fraction of this workforce is currently enrolled in pension plans. The commission is actively seeking ways to improve access and encourage saving for retirement.
Overall, these developments reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing the pension system and ensuring that retirees receive the benefits they deserve.
