Ex-Osun Lawmakers Charge Police to Stay Neutral and Resolute Ahead of August 15 Polls

Former Osun State House of Assembly lawmakers have issued a strong call to the Nigeria Police Force, urging the state command to stand firm, resist political pressure, and maintain strict neutrality in the buildup to the August 15 governorship election.

Rising from a strategic meeting in Osogbo, the former legislators expressed concern over rising political rhetoric and targeted campaigns aimed at discrediting security agencies operating across the state. They emphasized that a non-partisan, professional police force remains the ultimate guarantee for a peaceful, free, and credible democratic process.

Addressing recent demands from opposition quarters calling for the sweeping redeployment of senior police officers, the ex-lawmakers warned against destabilizing the state’s security architecture for political leverage. They noted that constant shuffling of command leadership on the eve of a major election creates operational gaps that violent syndicates and political thugs could exploit.

“Security is the backbone of democracy, and law enforcement must never become a pawn in political battles,” the ex-lawmakers declared in their joint address. “We charge the police high command to remain completely unbiased, professional, and uncompromising. Officers must protect all citizens equally, crush political violence wherever it rears its head, and refuse to be intimidated by anyone.”

The group further called on the Inspector-General of Police and heads of sister security agencies to deploy adequate personnel, intelligence tools, and tactical units across all local government areas to deter trouble-makers.

With political tensions rising across the state, the former lawmakers urged residents and party supporters to embrace peace, obey electoral guidelines, and collaborate with security operatives to ensure Osun remains safe before, during, and after the upcoming polls.
