Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, for their impressive qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final. The team secured their spot with a 3-1 victory over Brazil, which the governor called a remarkable achievement.

Governor Okpebholo praised the players for their determination, teamwork, and fighting spirit throughout the tournament. He specifically commended goal scorers Queen Joseph and Awawu Bashiru for their contributions to the win. The governor expressed confidence in the team’s ability to succeed in the final against Japan, encouraging them to remain focused and disciplined.

In addition to celebrating the Flamingos, Governor Okpebholo also addressed the recent fire disaster at Oluku Market. He provided relief materials to affected traders, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to support them. He assured the traders that they would not be abandoned and promised to rebuild the market to modern standards.

The governor stated, “We love you, we feel your pain, and we have come with these little things to share among you.” He highlighted the importance of building a safer market to protect traders’ goods in the future.

Okpebholo revealed that he had informed President Bola Tinubu about the fire, and the President has directed that the damaged shops be rebuilt. He also mentioned that further assistance would be provided to the victims, although it may not fully cover their losses.

During the relief effort, Jerry Idahosa, Executive Secretary of the Edo State Emergency Management Agency, noted that they would work with the National Emergency Management Agency to support the recovery of the affected traders. Some traders expressed their gratitude for the aid, stating it would help them cope with the aftermath of the disaster.
