FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Justifies Rising Billboard Costs Ahead of Elections
Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, has defended the steep costs of billboard advertising in Abuja as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. He spoke during a media chat in Port Harcourt, addressing concerns from opposition parties about the rising prices of billboard space.
As political campaigns ramp up, billboards are a key way to reach voters. However, opposition parties have complained that they cannot afford the increased costs. Wike responded by saying that political campaigns are expensive everywhere and that no party should view the price hikes as a targeted attack against them.
Wike emphasized that the FCT government needs revenue, and billboard advertising is a significant source of income. He stated, “We want money. The FCT wants money, and part of us making money is through the billboards to raise our revenue.” He clarified that the increased prices are intended to fund infrastructure improvements in the capital, such as roads and schools.
He also pointed out that elections are not won solely through billboards, questioning how many villagers are even aware of them. Wike noted that major political parties often pay for prominent media spots, suggesting that revenue generation is the primary goal rather than disadvantaging any specific party.
Wike stated he has not received any formal complaints from opposition parties about the price increases. He urged them to voice their concerns directly if they feel unfairly treated.
