Edo Court Sentences Four to Death for Kidnapping and Cult Membership

In Benin City, an Edo State High Court has sentenced three men and one woman to death by hanging for their roles in kidnapping and being part of a secret cult. The decision was made by Justice T. A. Momodu after a lengthy trial that lasted over three hours.

The individuals sentenced are Marvelous Isaac, 32; Wisdom Michael, 36; Rufus Michael, 30; and Gift Raphael, 27. They were found guilty on multiple charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery, stemming from an incident at the Vegetable Market in Benin City.

This court was specifically set up to handle cases related to kidnapping, cultism, and other violent crimes about three months ago. The establishment of this court followed a request from Governor Monday Okpebholo, leading to the Chief Judge dedicating two courts to focus on these serious offenses.

During the trial, the prosecution presented seven witnesses and several pieces of evidence. Notably, closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage played a crucial role in helping the police investigate and prove the case against the defendants.

Justice Momodu encouraged residents to install CCTV cameras in their homes and businesses, stating that security measures are essential. He also urged the Edo State Government to promote the use of CCTV technology through public awareness campaigns and to consider providing surveillance cameras in public areas like markets and parks.

The judge praised the Nigeria Police for their effective investigation, which led to the quick arrest of those involved in the kidnapping incident at the Vegetable Market.
