PDP Candidates Urge Plateau Electoral Commission to Hold Local Elections by October 10

Candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State are urging the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) to hold local government elections before October 10, 2026. They warn that failing to do so could lead to a gap in local government leadership.

The call was made during a press conference in Jos, led by Hon. Sylvanus Dashe Datong. The current local government officials’ term ends on October 10, and the candidates emphasize the need for elections to fill these positions.

The PDP candidates pointed out that the current local government officials were elected on October 9, 2024, and their term began the next day. They claim that according to the law, PLASIEC must conduct elections before the current officials’ term expires.

The candidates expressed concern that PLASIEC has not yet set a new date for the elections, which were initially scheduled for September 9, 2026. They highlighted that as of September 30, PLASIEC has not provided a timetable for the polls.

Additionally, the candidates dismissed the idea that a recent court ruling should delay the elections. They noted that PLASIEC was not involved in the lawsuit and should not let it affect their responsibilities.

To press their point, the candidates visited PLASIEC’s headquarters in Jos, carrying signs that called for immediate elections. They also submitted a formal letter outlining their concerns and demands.

The PDP candidates are urging PLASIEC to act quickly to ensure democracy continues in Plateau State. They warned that if elections are not held by October 10, it could create an “unconstitutional vacuum” in local governance.
