CONUA Calls for Enhanced Security Following Abduction of NYSC Members in Imo State

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) is urging the Federal Government and security agencies to enhance surveillance on highways and speed up rescue efforts for 20 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who were kidnapped. The young graduates were taken by gunmen near Umunoha in Imo State while traveling to their orientation camps.

The abduction occurred early in the morning, around 6:30 a.m., as the graduates were on their way from Ibadan, Oyo State, to camps in the South-East and South-South regions. The kidnappers are reportedly demanding a ransom of ₦100 million for their release.

CONUA’s National President, Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, described the situation as alarming and called for immediate security upgrades. He emphasized the need for a stronger security presence and improved surveillance on major highways to prevent future attacks.

In addition, CONUA has asked the Federal Government and the NYSC to review travel protocols for corps members. The organization also stressed the importance of better cooperation among security agencies, state governments, and local communities to create effective intelligence networks.

Dr. Sunmonu condemned the kidnapping as “barbaric” and highlighted the need for the safe return of the graduates. He pointed out that it is tragic for young Nigerians to face such dangers while participating in a program meant to foster national unity.

Alongside the call for a swift rescue, CONUA insists that the government should provide medical, psychological, and rehabilitation support to the victims and their families once they are freed. Sunmonu stated, “Young Nigerians should be able to travel and serve their country without fearing for their lives.”
