Federal Government Pays Eight Months’ Salary Arrears to University Staff Union

The Federal Government has taken steps to prevent a strike by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) by releasing eight months’ worth of salary arrears. This action came just two days after SSANU issued a warning that they would go on strike if their demands were not met.

SSANU had called for the immediate payment of funds owed to its members, including salaries withheld during a previous strike in 2022 and additional salary increases. The union expressed gratitude to the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, for his quick response in securing the release of these funds.

In a meeting at the University of Uyo, SSANU leaders highlighted the need for the government to fulfill its financial obligations to university workers. They warned that failure to address these outstanding payments could lead to further industrial action.

SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, noted that the government’s prompt action demonstrated the importance of communication and collaboration in maintaining peace within the university system. He encouraged union members to monitor the distribution of the released funds and report any discrepancies.

While the payment of the eight months’ arrears is a positive step, SSANU emphasized that the government must still address other outstanding payments. The union remains committed to engaging with the government to ensure the rights and welfare of its members are protected.

SSANU also urged state governments and university governing bodies to fully implement agreements related to funding and salaries to avoid future unrest in the education sector.
