Car Crashes into Crowd of Rugby Fans in Newcastle, Australia, Injuring 10
A driver lost control of his car and crashed into a crowd of rugby league fans in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday. The incident injured 10 people, including children, according to police.
Thousands of supporters had gathered to support the local team, the Newcastle Knights, ahead of their grand final match against the Sydney Roosters. The festive atmosphere turned tragic when an 18-year-old fan, described as driving erratically, crashed into the crowd.
Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris shared that the driver was excited and revving his car when he lost control. He said, “Somehow he lost control of the car… and he’s gone into the crowd.”
Among the injured, two people are in critical condition: a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man. Two other young children were also hurt in the crash.
The driver has been taken into custody. New South Wales Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison remarked that one person made a quick decision that endangered everyone.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his thoughts for those affected by the incident, stating that rugby league should bring joy to the community. Knights captain Kalyn Ponga also shared his support for the injured and their families through social media.
