Christian Association of Nigeria to Hold Government Accountable, Says President

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) will speak out against the government if it fails to protect citizens or violates their rights, according to its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh. He made these remarks during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, marking the association’s 50th anniversary.

Okoh stated that CAN aims to engage with the government constructively while remaining independent. He clarified that the organization is not a political opposition party and does not exist to simply praise the government. Instead, CAN focuses on promoting justice and addressing issues like insecurity and policies that harm the welfare of Nigerians.

He emphasized that while CAN will support government policies that benefit citizens, it will also voice concerns when injustices occur. Okoh said, “Where citizens are suffering, we cannot remain silent.” He reaffirmed that CAN’s commitment to truth will not be compromised by its relationship with political leaders.

In his comments, Okoh urged the government to intensify efforts to combat insecurity, highlighting ongoing issues such as terrorism, banditry, and communal violence. He noted that places of worship have been attacked and that farmers have been displaced, worsening food insecurity in the country.

While acknowledging the efforts of President Bola Tinubu to address violence and insecurity, Okoh called for further improvements in the performance of security agencies. He stressed that the government’s primary duty is to protect citizens and that people should not have to negotiate with criminals to stay safe.

As CAN celebrates its 50 years of service, Okoh reflected on its role in advocating for good governance, religious freedom, and humanitarian support. He expressed a desire for the organization to strengthen Christian unity and engage more with youth and women in leadership roles.

Looking ahead, Okoh stated that CAN’s anniversary is not just a celebration but a recommitment to its mission. The anniversary activities will include various events, culminating in a church service and awards presentation on October 18.
