Obi and Kwankwaso Meet Sultan of Sokoto to Discuss Unity and Security
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, visited the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Monday. The meeting took place in Sokoto as they prepared for town-hall events in the state.
During the visit, Obi emphasized the importance of national unity and improving security in Nigeria. He also mentioned the need to address poverty, create jobs, and rebuild confidence in the country. The delegation expressed condolences to the Sultan over the recent death of the Sardauna of Sokoto.
Obi shared on social media that he has known the Sultan for nearly 46 years, dating back to his time at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The Sultan reminded the group that leaders are responsible for their actions and will be held accountable.
According to Obi, the Sultan highlighted security, poverty, and employment as key issues facing Nigeria. He also encouraged viewing the country’s diversity of tribes as a strength rather than a weakness.
Obi and Kwankwaso are running together on the NDC ticket for the upcoming 2027 elections. This partnership comes after both politicians previously ran separately in the 2023 presidential election. Obi finished third in that election, while Kwankwaso also faced defeat.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has set the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027.
