Anambra Rallies FG and Private Investors to Beat Erosion and Build a Thriving Green Economy

The Anambra State Government is seeking to turn its long-standing battle against destructive gully erosion into an economic breakthrough by forging strategic climate partnerships with the Federal Government, private investors, and grassroots communities.

Speaking at the Anambra Climate Resilience and Erosion Greening Roundtable—held under the theme “From Gully Sites to Green Assets”—State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, emphasized that environmental degradation must no longer be viewed strictly as a drain on public finances. Instead, he stressed that ecological restoration, climate resilience, and smart waste management can serve as major engines for commercial investment, job creation, and sustainable state revenue.

The high-level virtual summit, organized in partnership with the Anambra Waste Recyclers Association (ASWRA) and the SWEEP Foundation NG, brought together policymakers, conservationists, recycling operators, and community leaders to chart a practical roadmap for environmental survival.

As part of efforts to scale up national response mechanisms, the commissioner extended an open invitation to the Special Adviser to the President on Climate Change, Mr. Yusuf Kelani, to conduct a comprehensive assessment of critical erosion ravines across the state to facilitate high-impact federal and international climate financing.

Participants at the roundtable highlighted that integrating nature-based solutions—such as reforestation, catchment pits, and agroforestry—with commercial waste-recycling systems will keep plastic waste out of drainage channels while opening up lucrative green entrepreneurship opportunities for young people.

Stakeholders concluded by calling for stronger Public-Private-Community Partnerships (PPCP), noting that equipping local waste aggregators with technology, formal recognition, and financial access will accelerate Anambra’s journey toward becoming a cleaner, greener, and economically resilient state.
