Akwa Ibom Chief Judge Advocates for AI to Support, Not Replace, Judiciary

The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaete Fabian-Obot, has emphasized the need for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist in the justice system rather than take over the roles of judicial officers. She made these remarks during a public lecture on Monday, marking the start of the 2026/2027 Legal Year.

Justice Fabian-Obot stated that while AI can improve efficiency in areas like legal research and case management, it must always serve justice and not control it. She highlighted that the judiciary should embrace technological advancements to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world.

She pointed out that any use of AI in the justice sector should align with judicial values and ethical standards, ensuring transparency and maintaining the independence of the judiciary. The Chief Judge believes that technology should enhance public trust in the legal system.

During the event, the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Pastor Umo Eno, represented by his deputy, Sen. Akon Eyakenyi, praised the strong relationship between the executive and judiciary. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the judiciary through various projects, including new residential facilities for judges and a new Court of Appeal complex in Uyo.

Governor Eno also mentioned the establishment of the Office of the Public Defender, which is set to begin operations in the new Legal Year, aimed at improving access to legal assistance for the public.
