Ondo Amotekun Claims to Have Arrested 80% of All Convicts

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, has made a bold claim, stating that its operatives are responsible for the apprehension of 80 per cent of all convicts currently serving sentences in correctional centers across the state. The assertion was made by the State Commander, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure.

Adeleye attributed the high number of convictions to the corps’ dual mandate to investigate and prosecute criminals, a power that he said allows them to follow cases through the judicial system and secure a high success rate. “We not only investigate, but the law permits us to investigate and prosecute,” he said, emphasizing the thoroughness of their work.

The commander stated that the volume of cases handled by Amotekun surpasses those of other security agencies operating in the state, a fact he believes has led to the significant reduction in crime rates since the corps’ inception. He reminisced about a time when commercial activities and personal movement were fraught with danger, a situation he says has largely been rectified by Amotekun’s operations.

According to Adeleye, the success of Amotekun has made Ondo State a difficult environment for criminals, with many now opting to flee to other states where the security architecture is less robust. The corps’ focus on both criminal activities and their sponsors is a strategy designed to permanently break the chain of crime in the state.
