Senate Calls for Investigation into Killings of 113 People in Benue State
The Senate has requested the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to quickly look into the killings of 113 people, including six Mobile Police officers, in the Benue North-East Senatorial District. This call for action came after a motion was raised by Senator Emmanuel Memga Udende from the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Benue North-East, regarding ongoing violence in the region.
Senator Udende highlighted that the attacks have resulted in numerous deaths, the destruction of homes, and the displacement of many residents in the Ukum, Katsina-Ala, and Logo Local Government Areas. He detailed several incidents, including the killing of 24 people in Sai, 63 in Bom and Aboajio villages, 15 individuals at Ayilamo (including six police officers), and 11 at Tse Biliji and Tse Shishi Nyako villages, all occurring on October 8, 2026.
The Senate condemned these violent acts and held a minute of silence to honor the victims. They also expressed their condolences to the families affected and to the Nigeria Police Force for the loss of its personnel. Furthermore, the Senate urged the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff, and heads of other security agencies to enhance operations in these troubled areas.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, expressed serious concern over the killing of armed security personnel, questioning the safety of unarmed communities. He emphasized the need to alert military leaders to take necessary actions to improve security in the affected regions.
