Army Probes Alleged Brutality by Soldiers in Enugu, Vows Disciplinary Action
The Nigerian Army has launched a thorough investigation into a video circulating on social media that allegedly shows soldiers brutalizing a civilian driver in Enugu State. The incident, which has sparked public outrage, occurred during a routine security check along the Nsukka–Igbo Eze South Road.
The alleged misconduct was confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division. According to the statement, the viral video depicts an encounter between soldiers deployed in the Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area and a civilian, with witnesses claiming the driver was forced to wade through a dirty pool of water after mistakenly splashing a soldier.
In response to the public outcry, Lt. Col. Ayeni stated that the 82 Division takes all reports of misconduct by its personnel seriously. He reassured the public that a thorough investigation has been instituted to establish the facts, and the findings will be made public.
“It is pertinent to add that appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken in accordance with military regulations if the personnel are established guilty,” the statement read.
The Army also used the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to maintaining professionalism and upholding the highest standards of conduct. The incident highlights the delicate nature of civil-military relations, especially in regions with a heightened military presence due to security challenges. The Army’s swift response in launching an investigation is seen as a move to foster transparency and accountability in its operations.
