AY Urges Public to Respect Naira, Foreign Currencies Following EFCC Invitation

AY Urges Nigerians to Respect Naira After EFCC Invitation Over Currency Spraying

Popular Nigerian comedian and filmmaker, Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has called on Nigerians to show greater respect for the naira and foreign currencies following a recent encounter with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a post shared on his official Instagram page, AY disclosed that he was invited by the anti-graft agency over an incident involving the public spraying of both local and foreign currencies at a social event an act now classified under naira abuse.

“On Monday, I was invited by the EFCC regarding an incident involving the public spraying of both local and foreign currencies an act that has been classified as an offense related to the abuse of the naira,” AY wrote.

He expressed gratitude to the EFCC for their professionalism and understanding, noting that he was granted a pardon after it was confirmed that the money sprayed was not linked to any criminal or illicit activity.

“I want to sincerely thank the EFCC and all authorities involved for their understanding and for granting me pardon based on confirmation that the money being sprayed is not linked to the proceeds of crime or any form of illicit funds,” he said.

Reflecting on the experience, AY described it as a turning point and pledged to use his platform to educate the public on the importance of treating the naira with respect.

“This experience has been a valuable lesson, and I am personally committed to promoting awareness about the proper respect and care for our national currency,” he added.

He also acknowledged that while spraying money at events is widely considered a cultural practice in Nigeria particularly during weddings, parties, and funerals, it remains a punishable offense under Nigerian law if it results in mutilation or defacement of the currency.

“It is important to understand that mutilating or abusing the naira whether by spraying, tearing, defacing, or mishandling is not just a cultural practice but also a violation of Nigerian law,” AY said. “Such acts undermine the integrity of our national currency and can have serious legal consequences.”

He concluded by encouraging citizens to embrace responsible financial behavior and support efforts to protect the dignity of the naira.

“Respect for the naira is respect for Nigeria’s future. Together, we can promote responsible behavior and foster a culture of patriotism and integrity,” he stated.
